According to oxford dictionary, lateral thinking is the solving of problems by an indirect and creative approach, typically through viewing the problem in a new and unusual light. It is a term coined by Edward de Bono in 1967. Unlike the usual method we use to solve a problem, which is more to step by step, it is okay for us in lateral thinking to come up with something that is even hardly related and far from the normal result. It is different from both vertical thinking that uses logic and horizontal thinking that uses imagination. This is some pictures of Edward de Bono and his book about lateral thinking. Not only came up with lateral thinking, he is also famous for his thinking hats, mind mapping, and many more approach in thinking matters.
For me personally, i find it hard to do the lateral thinking, to break the usual kind of thinking and try to come up with more advanced answer. It is fun and challenging though, to try answering tricky questions, even when it got me easily frustrated each times. Probably it is just that i am not used to do the lateral thinking (cause i don't wanna admit my lack of creativity :p), and it might get better the next time i try to do it again (i hope so). And because it is the topic we were having at creative thinking class last week, and this week also, we did a little mind twisting puzzle. Here is the results picture of my group that consisting of me and Erika.
Basically we just covered 5 questions for the whole session ( i mean everybody does the same thing), however we still got some wrong. It is not like there are some strict rules for the answer, but we were just haven't use the lateral thinking at all (according to me). Some numbers i got lucky because i have known the questions and the answer before, but it doesn't please me until i can answer with my own original yet mind-blowing answer, which haven't occur until this very time, sadly. Tomorrow, i expect to have some more questions and i don't know what to prepare, just pray for the best fellas..
And if you wondering to do some brain knotting questions on your own, i will leave some challenging questions bellow, i hope you haven't take this before. If you did, better to skip you know, because it will not help your problem solving skill. No offense, and have fun!!!
